I love a challenge when it comes to sewing, so I decided that I would try sewing a hat for the first time. My friend Jo is great at making all sorts of millinery, so she has been my inspiration.
I found a nice pattern for a 4-piece Newsboy, and after completing a toile in calico, I was ready to go. Just to make things even more interesting, Paul suggested that I make it using leatherette.
I was rather pleased with the outcome for a first try at hat making. The lining material is a Liberty silk fabric that I had left over from a previous project. The headband is a length of grosgrain ribbon.
If you’ve not used leatherette in any of your projects before, you will be surprised at how easy it is to sew with. And it gives a really professional finish.
After completing the project, I found out that Princess Katy (Duchess of Cambridge) has recently been seen wearing a Newsboy. Are they going to be the next big thing?
