I was delighted when my neighbour, Mary, invited me round to see her long arm quilting machine.
I couldn’t quite believe my luck as I’ve only seen long arm quilting machines demonstrated at trade fairs before. Mary has a whole room dedicated to sewing and quilting (photo above).
If you’re not familiar with long arm quilters then you probably wouldn’t realise how much room they need. Mary told me that the machine had to be built in the room because it’s too large to carry through the house!
Advantages of a Long Arm Quilter
Well I thought I would love this machine and it really did live up to my expectations. If like me you are used to trying to squeeze your quilt through your sewing machine, then seeing a long arm quilter is fabulous.
The machine has rollers which hold the wadding, backing and quilt top easily. So there’s no need for endless safety pins to hold your quilt together.
Mary very kindly set up a test piece on the side of the quilt panel that she was working on so that I could have a go. It is incredibly easy to control and moves effortlessly. The only problem I could see for me is it’s addictive. I can just imagine me getting completely engrossed and not stopping!
