design your own hanbag

I’m really excited because I got some fab crafting gifts for Christmas. One of my favourites was access to a handbag making course on Craftsy called ‘Design Your Own Handbag’.

Now if you haven’t heard of Craftsy they are a US company that specialise in educational videos for crafters as well as having patterns and supplies. I’m not sure how my husband came across them, because I’ve never heard of them before…but I’m glad he did!

The course format

The course itself is presented by Brett Bara and is broken down into 10 videos. You are able to watch these online on your PC, although I downloaded the Craftsy app and prefer to watch them on my iPad. You could also watch them on your smart phone if you wanted – ideal if you have 10 minutes to spare while you are out and about. The videos are all professionally shot and very easy to follow.

In addition to the videos there are also 10 pages of pdf’s that you can print out at home. Again these are all well designed and of high quality. If you are worried that American measurements will be used and you’re used to metric, they have even included a useful metric conversion table for sewing.

Last but not least, there is access to a community of other crafters that have taken the course. It is amazing to see the variety and quality of bags that people have made. You can also ask questions and see the responses to questions that others have made.

My take on it

Being a qualified teacher (and spent years in both secondary schools and special education), I’m quite demanding when it comes to education materials. But I am quite happy to say that this course is an example of high quality teaching that is still fun and easy for people to use.

Compared to an evening class or day class, online tutorials represent good value for money and are the next best thing to having an experienced tutor next to you. You can also replay parts as many times as you want.

When I’ve finished my bag, I’ll post a picture of it on this blog.

Below is a video introduction to the course.
